What is the mobile future?
This is a very big question and one to which there is no clear answer but we can speculate about what we do know and where we think that will lead. A few things are a given fact such as an ever increasing number of features, the device being slim, durable, lightweight, plenty of battery life, easy to use and lots of memory all the points Apple have tried to address with their iPhone; how successful they will be we will be better able to understand in a years time when the ‘phones have been out in the world and the initial frenzy has died down and people are learning to live with them. I think the mobile future will follow one of three paths depending upon your choice/needs at the time:

1. Functional ‘phones, those that provide reliable ‘phone services with built in radios, music players, games etc.
2. Smartphones such as the Treo, iPhone, Symbian and WM ‘phones
3. The combination of smartphone and portable laptop style devices for users who need or want to do more.

Leaving aside the first option which will cover the majority of mobile device users and looking at the second and third options; they are mostly the same user group just a matter of device preference or device combination to meet the task at hand. I know that I use my Treo extensively for note taking but much prefer to use a “proper” keyboard and screen to work on documents for any length of time but I would not necessarily carry both at the same time, I am very much a right tools for the job person.

What is Palm doing about the mobile future?
They have a good OS, not as young as it used to be but still good, and I would like to see it developed further and for Palm to create a truly mobile device to rival Nokia and HTC but I don’t think they want to do it. Instead they are building Foleo’s to pitch against UMPC’s and the Asus EEE PC etc. and essentially tweaking and re-skinning existing devices to put a “new” product in the field which isn’t competing at the same level as it’s rivals. Palm has a lot to compete with when it comes to the mobile device market and they are not doing it; they are not offering anything new that will make the HTC WM or Blackberry user sit up and take notice and want to change; Nokia have been producing smartphones for some time but they have worked hard to develop their product and Palm needs to do the same. They created the mass market for handheld devices so there is no reason why they should revolutionise it.

What does my mobile future look like?
It is very unlikely I will have another Treo unless Palm actually rethink how they commission a device from their manufacturer; along with most of the HTC devices they have volume issues that need registry hacks or third party software to correct. What they need to do is to build a telephone and with a PDA as part of the build, as Nokia do, not a PDA with some ‘phone functions bolted on and they need to offer specs that will compete with in the market place ie. A VGA camera is no competition for a 3.2 mega pixel camera. For instance, I like the look of the new E90 (it reminds me of my old Psion Series 5); it has a good spec and it will be one I consider when my contract comes up for renewal in 6 months.

So ultimately I don’t think it’s probable that there will ever be a single “do all” device because we all have differing needs and wants but what I think will happen is that from the variety of form factors a small number will emerge to become more dominant and from those people will find the single device or combination of devices that best suit them.

So back to my original question “What is the mobile future?” the answer is I don’t know, but it will be very interesting finding out.
